Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Available from February 20

Following updates to the Australian COVID-19 vaccination program, bivalent Moderna and Pfizer booster shots will be available to all patients over 18 years  of age who have not had a vaccine dose or COVID-19 infection within the past six months, from Monday February 20.

The ATAG recommends a 2023 COVID-19 booster for all adults 65 years and over as well as adults 18-64 who have medical comorbidities increasing the risk of severe COVID-19, or disability with significant health needs.

They urge adults 18-64 and children 5-17 with similar additional health needs to consider a 2023 booster if their last COVID-19 vaccine dose or confirmed infection was six months ago or longer. Additionally, it is suggested that it is beneficial for the booster dose to occur before June 2023, once the availability criteria are met.

Additional information on the booster advice, as at February 8 2023, can be found in the ATAGI statement at this link.

The additional protection of a bivalent booster dose is the best way to protect yourself from severe COVID-19, especially if you are at higher risk.
